Friendship United Methodist Church is a long time supporter of the Bolingbrook FISH organization. This is one way we work within our community to help others. Each month, usually on the second Sunday of the month, we bring food for those in need and donate it through FISH.

What is FISH?

Bolingbrook FISH is an organization of volunteers concerned about the needs of others. The purpose of Bolingbrook FISH is to provide a means by which people committed to Jesus Christ can respond to Christ's teachings about providing food, drink, hospitality, clothing, help, and human fellowship to people in need of these. (Matthew 25:35)

Our mobile and rapidly changing society often creates feelings of alienation and isolation, a sense of not knowing where to turn for help. The services available through FISH can ease that feeling.

How FISH Works

FISH employs a 24 hour answering service. When a call for help comes in, the answering service takes the name and phone number of the caller and tells him that his call will be returned by FISH. The phone volunteer on duty is contacted and returns the call to see if we can help. The volunteer may serve as a listening post, give information about community and government resources, or call on other types of FISH volunteers.

What Can YOU Do?

Most FISH services require no special talents or skills beyond an honest concern for others. As a FISH volunteer, you could:

  • Serve as a phone volunteer in your own home
  • Provide emergency transportation
  • Provide emergency babysitting, child care, and meal preparation
  • Do light housework and errand running for the sick and disabled
  • Serve on the prayer chain
  • Locate needed articles, such as clothing
  • Provide companionship for a shut-in or blind person

How Much Time Does It Take?

Volunteer services require varying amounts of time. Volunteers set their own time commitments with some working a few hours a month and others much more.
